Lewins Mead Bridge removal, Bristol

EPS Drilling were employed by Wring Group to carry out Specialist Wire Sawing, Track Sawing and Brokk Demolition to assist them in removing the 1970's post tensioned bridge within the Bristol City Centre. Conventional demolition methods were not practical due to the adjacent concrete structures having to be retained and no error for vibration or movement. A method was developed and approved by structural engineers for the operation including structural support works and a suitable road closure.

The Deconstruction of the bridge was planned to be carried out over a weekend and the road would reopened to the public 6am Monday morning.

A 750 ton crane used and was attached with large beams. EPS used two wire saws to cut the centre of the bridge followed simultaneously with a further four sections being cut and lowered safely to an area for Wring's excavators to pulverise the bridge sections and remove from site and the final destination of recycling the project was completed on time and on budget.
